An unrivaled outing rooted in Croatia’s flourishing natural interior, our Plitvice Lakes Escape begins in this formerly abandoned Krš hamlet, rebuilt from the outlines of collapsed walls. Once thriving and then forgotten, Lika retreat breathes life into a new era far from desolation yet revered for its solitude.
Lika retreat is designed with four holiday homes enhanced by canopies, barbecues, and outbuildings, allowing for larger groups to be comfortably accommodated. The traditional lodges can house 2 to 8 guests depending on your choice, each with an expansive living room, fireplace, kitchen, wifi, large outside grills, gazebos, and a swimming pool.

Our Plitvice Lakes Escape has been carefully designed with outdoor excursions fit for the whole family, allowing you to explore the stunning scenery of the Plitvice Lakes region and Croatia’s unrivaled natural gems. All tours within the program are guided and all transfers are made by minivan. All tours depart in the morning (around 9 am) with flexible returns between 3 pm and 6 pm. Lunch is not included during the tour so it’s always smart to pack a snack; otherwise there will be restaurants at each location should you wish to stop for a bite!
It’s time to start your adventure. All guests will be accompanied to their accommodation and welcomed with a traditional selection of local cold cuts, cheeses, and pastries to get a taste of the region. The rest of the day is reserved for you to settle in and kick back by the pool, while those more eager to seize the day can begin exploring the natural world of Lika County.
Just 30 minutes away is Plitvice Lakes National Park, not only the oldest and largest Croatian national park but undoubtedly the most famous. We’ll depart in the morning to ensure you have a full day exploring the park’s 16 terraced lakes, waterfalls, and limestone canyons. Our tour begins at the park's north entrance (Entrance 1) and lasts 3-4 hours with 4,000 meters on foot, taking wooden walkways and pristine paths that maze through the park’s core. We will stroll through the limestone canyon of the Lower Lakes, take an electric-boat ride across the largest Lake Kozjak, enjoy a scenic train ride, and traverse the top of the canyon’s east side to return to Entrance 1. The most attractive sights will be the Great Waterfall and Sastavci waterfalls, the blue lakes of Novakovića Brod, Kaluđerovac, Gavanovac, and Milanovac, and Lake Kozjak. If you get hungry, you can dine at one of the restaurants inside the park or pack some snacks to hold you over until we return home. Don’t forget to bring water and wear comfortable shoes!
Because Plitvice Lakes National Park is 295-sqm of karst landscapes and dense forest, you’ll need more than one day to grasp its grandeur fully. Another morning departure will bring you back to the park to tick off everything you couldn’t fit in on the first day - like the Upper Lakes. This 2-3 hour tour begins at the south entrance (Entrance 2) and includes 5,100 meters of walking. After a short boat ride across Kozjak Lake, we’ll head upstream to Lake Prošćansko before taking a sightseeing train to our starting point. We’ll explore the Upper Lakes, Great and Small Prštavci falls, and several smaller waterfalls on this tour. But that’s not all. You’ll also get to visit Rastoke just 25 minutes north of Plitvice Lakes. A mill town that traces back some 300 years, Rastoke is where the Slunjčica River spills into the Korana river over travertine rocks, forming even more cascading waterfalls known as the ‘Small Plitvice Lakes.’ Living in harmony with nature, Rastoke is decorated with charming 19th-century wooden houses and water-powered mechanical mills. Its history is preserved through exhibitions that delve into the milling process, while the lives of the village’s early residents are seen thanks to an ethnographic collection at the Rastoke Museum.
Just one hour away is yet another national park, this time Croatia’s youngest - Northern Velebit. Covering 109 km2 of the northern Velebit mountains, the largest Croatian mountain range, this national park is a dream for anyone seeking adventure, which is primarily thanks to the Premužić Trail. Designed and built by forestry engineer and mountaineer Ante Premužić, this trail opened to the public in 1933, taking only three years to build! Known as a trail building masterpiece, this drystone route makes the most rugged and inaccessible sections of Northern Velebit easy to access for all types of hikers. The 16 km route has no steep ascents and is adorned with information boards for those less accustomed to mountaineering. Premužić Trail was also officially protected as a cultural asset of national importance in 2009.
Just a short drive away is Otočac and the Gacka River, a subterranean river that passes through karst fields and, most notably, the town of Otočac itself. Also a popular place for trout fishers, you get to spend the day paddling on this 8-kilometer-long Gacka River route, uncovering the diverse flora and fauna of the Lika region. Whether you choose the unique transparent kayak made from impenetrable glass, or the more traditional kayak, both experiences allow you to uncover the unparalleled natural world of this crystalline river. Several kayaking routes are offered for family-friendly adventures or more romantic and relaxed rowing courses. But if you’d like to stay on land? Join our tour around the Gacka area! This bike tour unearths the hidden gems of Gacka from the river to the valley, the Church of St. Francis, Sanctuary of god Mitra, airplane museum, and more on recreational and family-friendly routes made easy for everyone in your group. The quality mountain bikes easily ride on asphalt, unpaved, and meadow roads, and we provide a pair of binoculars (Nikon Aculon A211 8×42) for birdwatching, too!
Considering it has been a pretty active holiday so far, you’ll have the option to unwind on Day 6 and rest your legs, take it easy by the pool, or nourish your mind, body, and soul with some self-care and family time. But if you’re eager to jump back into our adventure, we’ll take you away to Una Spring, located at 395.8-meters above sea level under the slopes of Lička Plješivica and Stražbenica mountains in the Gračac municipality. One of the deepest and strongest springs in this area, the aquamarine Una Spring is enveloped by dense forest and sharp cliffs, with the Una waterfall just 10 meters away. The lake and the canyon surrounding the Una Spring and the 150-meter downstream flow became a protected hydrological monument of nature in 1968.
We know that our Lika retreat is ideally located next to many of Croatia’s leading natural gems, but what if we tell you that one of Croatia’s most famous coastal towns is within reach, too? Our final day is reserved for Zadar, an open-air museum town that traces back some 3,000 years! Not only did its city walls become a part of UNESCO World Heritage in 2017, but the historic core of the town is decorated by luxurious Middle-Aged palaces, ancient churches, bustling squares and districts, and narrow alleyways that transport you into yesteryear. However, some of Zadar’s newer attractions have become the most famous - like the multicolored Monument to the Sun light installation and the musical Sea Organ, both products of Zadar native and Croatia’s most renowned architect Nikola Bašić.
As all good things must come to an end, so must your time here. But not before you take one last breath of the clean Lika air. Our flexible check-out between 10 am and 2 pm allows you to pack up in peace and enjoy one final breakfast in our nature retreat. Transfers are included to Split and Zadar Airports, while other transfers needed to Zagreb or elsewhere in Croatia can be discussed at an additional cost. We may not be on your next adventure, but we’ll make sure we can get you there.
